Coffee and ice cream cups – recyclable only in theory

While many businesses that sell their products in this packaging think they are recyclable, the reality is often quite different.

Most of this packaging is made from what is known as “composite material”, which means that it is made up of several different layers, such as paper and plastic, or cardboard and aluminium.📦

Such packaging offers resistance to moisture, grease or heat, while being non-recyclable.

The European Union’s (EU) environmental requirements are getting stricter every year. The aim is to maximise the amount of packaging that is recycled and to reduce the amount of non-recycled waste. By 2030, all packaging is expected to be 100% recyclable.

📉 No exemptions for non-recyclable plastic, PET and combined packaging from 2025. Fees apply to the total amount placed on the market, even if some of it is recycled.

Let’s compare the taxable rate:

✅Packaging for recycling (520 Eur/t)

❌Unprocessed – significantly more expensive (€875-1200/t).

Companies importing such packaging or using it to sell their products should review again whether they have correctly entered such packaging into the GPAIS system.

Certificates provided by suppliers with the sentence below are often misleading both for importers of packaging and for business units purchasing packaging to sell their products.

⚠️ Public authorities inspect businesses that supply products in non-recyclable packaging. False declarations or evasion of waste management can result in fines and reputational damage.💶

*The package in the photo is meaningless and does not prove that the packaging is recyclable.
